Let’s say Goodbye to Typewriters

Godrej and Boyce, the last company to make manual typewriters, has closed its plant in Mumbai, leaving the typewriter officially a product of the past.
The reason put forth by the company for the closure being paucity of orders.

From the early 2000s due to invasion of computers, typewriters value have steadily faded. All the manufacturers of office typewriters stopped production, except Godrej.
Till 2009, Godrej were reported to be getting orders for around 10,000 to 12,000 machines a year.
When the company started its operations in the 1950s, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru mentioned typewriters as a symbol of independent and industrialised India. The major typewriter manufacturers in the world included companies like Remington Rand, Olivetti, Smith-Corona, Adler-Royal, Olympia, Nakajima and Godrej.
During the golden years, Godrej exported typewriters many countries.
For those who love the ping of margin bells or are eager to have a piece of history, there are 500opportunities waiting, as the company has only 500 machines left. The machines are of Godrej Prima, and will be sold at a maximum retail price of Rs 12,000

How to Turn off Error Reporting in Windows XP

Error in Internet Explorer

Error Reporting is on by default in Windows XP ProfessionalService Pack 1. The service gives Microsoft the ability to track and address errors relating to the operating system, components, and applications. The ideabehind the service was that Microsoft would be able to track down bugs and fixthem more efficiently and quickly.
Many users do not need or want to take advantage of thisfeature and would like to turn it off. Many of these users are concerned aboutwhat information is being passed on to Microsoft and about their privacy. Otherusers are just annoyed at how often they see the screen (Figure A) that asks them to submit the bug through the ErrorReporting service.

Solution 1

The controls to turn off or customize Windows ErrorReporting reside in System Settings, located in the Control Panel. (You canalso right-click My Computer and select Properties.) In the System Settingsdialog box, select the Advanced tab and then click the Error Reporting buttonto reveal the Error Reporting dialog box shown in Figure B.
Error Reporting configuration
From this dialog box, you can disable Error Reporting orcustomize it to work only on certain programs and/or Windows components.
Once you've disabled Error Reporting, you might as welldisable the service entirely, which you can do through Administrative Tools inthe Control Panel. Double-click on Services from the Administrative Toolsdialog box, scroll down to the Error Reporting entry, and double-click it. Fromthis dialog box, you can stop the service or restart it if you turned if offbefore.

Solution 2

Apparently, even disabling Error Reporting through theconventional means may not be enough, as VAXenGuy discovered. If you still get error messages afterdisabling Error Reporting, especially dubious ones, you could disable theservice with a Windows Registry edit.
Open the Windows Registry with your favorite editor andnavigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PCHealth\ErrorReporting
To disable Error Reporting, make sure all of the values located in this key are set to zero.

Add an item to the Send To menu

When you right-click a file name or a thumbnail in Microsoft Windows XP, you see a shortcut menu for that file. One of the items on the menu is Send To, which enables you to quickly e-mail a file, copy it to your desktop, compress it or copy it to a floppy disk.
You may want to save a copy of the file to a specific folder on your computer. If you have a folder where you frequently place files, you can add that folder’s name to the list of locations on the Send To menu. This can save you the time of opening another Windows Explorer window and copying the file from one folder to another.

To add a folder to the Send To menu:
1. In the My Computer window, click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options. Click the View tab. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.
2. In the My Computer window, double-click Local Disk (C:), double-click Documents and Settings, double-click your user name, and then double-click SendTo.
3. Click the File menu, click New, and then click Shortcut.
4. The Create Shortcut Wizard appears. Click the Browse button.
5. In the Browse For Folder dialog box, click the folder you want to add to your Send To menu, and then click OK.
6. Click Next-> Click Finish.
Alternatively, you can create a shortcut for your folder at the location of the folder by right clicking and selecting the option Send to Desktop. From Desktop, the shortcut can be copied and pasted in Send To folder.
Now when you right-click a file and click Send To, the destination you selected will be an option on the Send To menu. You can create shortcuts to local or network programs, files, folders, computers, or Internet addresses.

IE saves images as Bitmaps(.BMP)

When you save an image in Microsoft Internet Explorer, the image is saved by default as a bitmap (.bmp). You do not have the option to save the image by using an extension other than .bmp. You experience this behavior even when the image uses a different format (such as .gif or .jpeg).

For example, when you right-click an image on a Web page, and then click Save Picture As, the file name that appears in the File name box is Untitled, and the file type that appears in the Save as type box is Bitmap (*.bmp).
This behavior may occur if a damaged program file (for example, an ActiveX or Java object) is downloaded to the SystemRoot\Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk.
To troubleshoot and resolve this behavior, empty the contents of the Temporary Internet Files folder, and then delete the files in the Downloaded Program Files folder that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged.
To do so:
Start Internet Explorer (if it is not already started).
Empty the contents of the Temporary Internet Files folder.
To do so:
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the General tab.
Under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files.
When you are prompted to delete all temporary Internet files, click OK.
In the Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk, remove the files that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. To do so:
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the General tab.
Under Temporary Internet files, click Settings.
Click View Objects.
The list of program files that are downloaded to the SystemRoot\Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk appears in the Downloaded Program Files window.
In the Status column, note the files that are listed as either Unknown or Damaged. Remove these files. To do so, right-click the file, and then click Remove.
When you are prompted to confirm the removal, click Yes.
Close the Downloaded Program Files window, and then click OK two times.
Save an image in Internet Explorer to test and determine if the issue is resolved.
If the issue continues to occur after you remove all downloaded program files that are listed as Unknown or Damaged, try removing the other downloaded program files that are on the list.
Note: The next time that you need one of the files that you removed from the Downloaded Program Files folder, you will receive a prompt to download the file to your hard disk in Internet Explorer.
If you follow these steps, and the issue still occurs, move the Temporary Internet Files folder to a new location. To move the folder, follow these steps:
Start Internet Explorer.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
On the General tab, click Settings under Temporary Internet files.
Click Move Folder.
In the Browse for Folder dialog box, select a new location for the folder, and then click OK.
Click OK to close the Settings dialog box.
When you receive the following warning message, click Yes:
Windows will now log you off to finish moving Temporary Internet Files.
Do you want to continue?
(All other changes have been saved.)
Windows automatically logs you off of the computer.
Log back on to the computer.

Turn On or Off Automatic Windows Logon

Autologon enables you to easily configure Windows’ built-in autologon mechanism. Instead of waiting for a user to enter their name and password, Windows uses the credentials you enter with Autologon, which are encrypted in the Registry, to log on the specified user automatically.
Autologon is easy enough to use. Just run autologon.exe, fill in the dialog, and hit Enable. To turn off auto-logon, hit Disable. Also, if the shift key is held down before the system performs an autologon, the autologon will be disabled for that logon. You can also pass the username, domain and password as command-line arguments: autologon user domain password
